Ross moved to Sonoma County in 1990, after spending the first five years of his career in Southern California. Ross has a broad range of community interests, including government, private sector and non-profit organizations. He served on Windsor, California's first Parks and Recreation Commission, where he was elected both Vice-Chairman and Chairman during his tenure. His governmental involvement also included an appointment on the Sonoma County Business Crime Prevention Task Force, and selection to Leadership Santa Rosa Class XVI. Ross was also a long-time director of the North Bay World Trade Association, focusing on international business issues, and served on the Sonoma County Bar Association Board of Directors, where he was elected to two terms as Chair of the Intellectual Property and Technology Law section. Ross' commitment to community extends to non-profit organizations, including the boards of the Santa Rosa Sunrise Rotary Club (President-Elect 2007-2008), and Congregation Beth Ami. His interests also include technology-related fields; Ross is a contributing writer to SECRETS of Home Theater and High Fidelity magazine, and he plays bass guitar in several local ensembles.
